Piscataquis Public Health Council Meeting
June 20, 2002
Mayo Regional Hospital, Dover-Foxcroft
Present: Renee Speh, Community Partnership Director; Susan Crippen, North Country Healthy Communities; Tom Lizotte, Mayo Regional Hospital; Kathy Cobb, C.A. Dean Memorial Hospital; Will Hunter, Mayo Alcohol & Drug Counseling Service; Jane Conroy, UMaine Cooperative Extension; Dyna Curtis and Martha Herrick, Greenville co-School Health Coordinators.

Renee Speh opened the agenda by presenting results from the environmental indicator survey. Group discussed results, which showed clear need for written non-smoking policies for municipal buildings and grounds.

Group watched 16-minute DHS video, "Maine Communities: A Healthy Place to Live." Members agreed the message on the need to promote good health came across very strongly, and that viewing this might inspire other community members to action. It was felt the video would be an excellent introduction to the PPHC work for other community groups, since it gives concrete examples of what can be done. Members identified a number of target audiences that would benefit from seeing the video: selectmen/town managers, Penquis Leadership class, legislative delegation, area employers, hospital boards, school boards, middle/high school health classes, Chamber of Commerce boards, faith communities/hospital chaplaincy committee, service clubs, senior citizens groups, corrections inmates/staff. There are 6 copies of the tape in our area: Community Partnership Director and five school health coordinators.

Action: The 6 people with copies of the video will try to show it to as many of the target audiences as possible in their geographic area, with Renee to coordinate so that there are no overlaps.

Renee reported that Cathy Brown has been hired as her part-time program assistant. Cathy is working now on workplan items in the current fiscal year, and will work one day each week after July 1.

Renee presented summary sheet of PPHC workplan strategies for review.

We have already received 30-35 applications for the mini-grant program; today is the deadline. Renee and consultant John Spieker will sift through the applications, which will then be reviewed by a three-person screening committee on June 24. Applicants who are approved for funding will be notified by the middle of next week.

Meeting adjourned. Next meeting: Thursday, July 18, 10-11:30 a.m. at Mayo Resource Center.
